Did you know that anywhere from 70% to 85% of jobs are filled through networking? Regardless of industry, networking is one of the most effective ways to find internships and jobs because many opportunities are shared through connections before they’re ever posted publicly. Building relationships with peers, faculty, alumni, and professionals in your field gives you access to insider knowledge, career advice, and potential referrals. Networking also helps you stand out by putting a face and story behind your application, showing employers your initiative and interest. Strong connections can open doors to opportunities you might not find otherwise, which is especially helpful in navigating our current job market.
Not sure where to begin? Check out the following tips:
- Start with who you know – Networking doesn’t have to be intimidating! Begin by talking with friends, professors, coaches, or student club leaders. They may have connections or advice to share.
- Leverage LinkedIn and alumni networks – Create a strong LinkedIn profile and start by reaching out to Dartmouth alumni. You can also use Handshake and Dartmouth Connect to make connections!
- Practice your introduction – Prepare a short, confident way to share who you are, what you’re studying, and what interests you. A well-crafted elevator pitch helps you make a strong first impression.
- Be curious, not pushy – Networking is about building relationships, not asking for favors. Approach conversations as opportunities to learn, not just to land a referral or a job. Our networking guide gives more insight into what’s appropriate and inappropriate to ask during an initial conversation.
- Follow up thoughtfully – After meeting someone, send a short thank-you email or LinkedIn message. This small gesture shows professionalism and helps you stay memorable. Learn more about how to follow up after an interview or networking conversation here.
- Attend events and get involved – Career fairs, guest lectures, professional association events, and campus mixers are all great ways to meet people in your field. Check out Handshake’s events tab to see what’s happening!
- Think long-term – Networking works best when you build relationships over time. Stay in touch, share updates, and continue to grow your connections. An easy and natural way to develop your relationship is to ask for advice, act on that advice, and report back.
- Give back when you can – Even as a student, you can always share resources, events, or encouragement. A simple “like” on a LinkedIn post can go a long way!
