Imagine: you’ve made it through the initial screening and interviews, and now you’ve been invited to a Superday — the final, high-stakes round where firms evaluate not only your technical and behavioral skills but also how well you fit into their culture. Feeling nervous? 😬 Read on for advice on how to stand out!
Understand the Purpose of a Superday
Superdays aren’t just a test of your knowledge — they’re really more of a test of your consistency under pressure. Recruiters and bankers want to see how you perform when you’re tired or stressed, whether your personality and communication style fit the firm, and if you can hold your own in multiple conversations with several different people. It’s important to remember that Superdays are a marathon, not a sprint.
Prepare Strategically Beforehand
Know your story inside and out. Every interviewer should walk away knowing why finance, why this firm, and why you. Be able to walk your interviewer through your resume by connecting each experience to relevant finance skills, like analytical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and initiative. If you have a job description handy, review the “qualifications” section and take note of the particular skills they’re looking for. Then, develop 5-10 stories about where and how you’ve used these skills.
Equally important? Refreshing your technical skills! You can expect questions on the following:
- Accounting (e.g., three statements linkage)
- Valuation methods (e.g., DCF, comps, precedent transactions)
- Market trends or recent deals
- Company analysis (know 1-2 recent deals the firm worked on if possible)
If you’re recruiting for a corporate finance or asset management role, you may also get questions on budgeting, forecasting, or investment strategy.
Build Real Rapport During the Interview
Each round—even the final one!—is ultimately about fit. Small things make a big difference here, like smiling, staying engaged, and matching your interviewer’s energy. Be sure to use your active listening skills, as it’s always better to give one thoughtful, conversational response than to rush through a series of rehearsed answers. Showing intellectual curiosity is also key: consider asking 1-2 questions specific to their role or deals.
Manage Your Energy and Mindset
Superdays can last for hours (!) and you may meet anywhere from 5-10 interviewers. It’s important to treat each interaction as a fresh start, and avoid carrying a tough interview into the next one. Try to consider each conversation as an opportunity to learn something new about the firm, not just to impress them — this helps you sound more genuine. Pace yourself and keep your energy consistent, because recruiters definitely notice if you fade out by the final round. It can help to stay hydrated and even pack a few snacks, if possible.
Nail the “End of Day” Interaction
If there’s a wrap-up session or informal networking event following the Superday, always remember to stay professional — you’re still being evaluated! This means being personable without coming across as overly casual. An important piece of wrap-up that often goes neglected is sending a thank you note. Be sure to send out personalized thank you notes within 24 hours to everyone you met with, and mention something specific that you discussed during your conversation to help you stand out.
