Position Summary
Aging with Dignity (AWD) is a national nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization with a mission to safeguard the God-given right to age with dignity. It is America’s premier guide for end-of-life care and maintaining human dignity. AWD’s Five Wishes advance care planning program has more than 43 million users around the world, is available in 33 languages, and has been distributed by 15,000 organizations.
The mission of AWD was inspired by the life and work of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. AWD’s advocacy efforts put humans first and oppose the dehumanizing effects of assisted suicide (AS) by providing hopeful alternatives.
The Research Associate shall work from AWD’s office in Falls Church, VA, and report directly to the President of AWD. The focus of the research will be on the activities of AS and euthanasia proponents through in-depth research into the organizations and individuals advancing these ideas, as well as the ideas themselves.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, document, and report on the subjects of AS and euthanasia in both the United States and other nations, particularly related to:
- Debunking common pro-AS arguments
- The abuse of patients and/or the violations of legal safeguards in states with pro-AS or euthanasia laws
- The ‘slippery slope’ imposed by AS legalization
- Unintended consequences of AS legalization and euthanasia
- The negative impact on the physically and mentally disabled
- The use of AI to spread or abet AS and/or Euthanasia
- Ongoing legislative efforts in the US and other countries
- Research and produce written reports on the landscape of advance care planning in America, and forge partnerships with other researchers in this space
- Assist in writing video scripts for 5-, 10-, and 20-minute investigative/educational pieces
- Coordinate with colleagues at AWD’s Florida office as needed
- Execute special projects and other tasks as determined by President
Skills & Experience
- Passionate commitment to AWD’s mission, core beliefs, and strategic direction
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Excellent written communication skills, able to write clearly and concisely on complex topics
- Experience in conducting research projects focused on public policy and/or social issues
- Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and balance competing priorities
- Proven ability to exercise discretion and protect the confidentiality of work product and communication of the organization
- Capable of working independently and in a team environment
- Technological proficiency required in the Microsoft suite of programs or Microsoft 365. Experience with social media dynamics and public policy debates a plus
Reporting
The Research Associate reports directly to the President of AWD.
