Internship Midpoint Reflection & Feedback Guide

As you approach the midpoint of your internship, the Center for Career Design hopes that you are finding your experience to be a valuable opportunity to build skills, connect with mentors, and explore a potential career path. Internships are one of the best ways to prototype or test a career direction in a real-world setting.
Now is a great time to pause and reflect on your experience so far: what you have learned, what you are discovering about yourself and your field, and how you want to make the most of the time that remains.
Use the questions below to take stock of your experience so far:
- What have I learned about this field, organization, or research area?
- What professional skills have I developed (e.g., communication, teamwork, time management, adaptability, professionalism)?
- What specific or technical skills have I gained (e.g., research methods, software tools, data analysis, writing, project management, creative production)?
- How have I applied classroom knowledge or prior experience in this setting?
- What challenges have I encountered, and how have I addressed them?
- What do I still hope to learn or accomplish during the remainder of the internship?
Tip: Keep a short record of your projects and learning moments. These will be useful when updating your resume or preparing for future opportunities.
Feedback helps you understand your impact, recognize your strengths, and identify areas for growth.
- Does my internship include a formal feedback or evaluation process?
- If not, how might I ask for informal feedback from my supervisor or mentor?
- What strengths have been most visible in my work, and how have they contributed to the project or team?
- What areas could I strengthen to increase my effectiveness?
Example question to ask your supervisor: “As I reach the midpoint of my internship, I’d appreciate your perspective on what’s going well and what I could focus on improving over the next few weeks.”
- Schedule a midpoint check-in or feedback conversation with your supervisor.
- Clarify goals for the remainder of your internship–projects to finish, new skills to practice, or areas to explore.
- Ask about opportunities to learn more about how your team or organization works, or to observe different aspects of the work.
We can help! Meet with a Career & Life Design Coach to:

Your internship or supported off-term experience is a chance to learn by doing, test your interests, and grow in a real-word context. Use this midpoint reflection to ensure the rest of your experience is purposeful and aligned with your learning goals.
