- When composing a resume for a media or production opportunity, the content of your resume is far more important than the format you use.
- In the education section of your resume, list relevant coursework (i.e. courses that demonstrate use of writing and research skills and/or a passion for the arts).
- Write clear, descriptive bullet points that demonstrate your previous experience and skills you have developed.
- Highlight specific software and/or tools you have used.
- It is critical to include links to your previous work. Prospective employers want to see examples of what you have done. These links in your resume can separate you from other applicants.
- If you are showcasing work from only one previous experience, you can include your examples within the description for that specific job.
- If you have created a portfolio to highlight examples from multiple work experiences, it is best to include the portfolio hyperlink in your resume header.
- When creating a portfolio, there are many platforms to choose from. Select the platform that best suits your needs. One popular option in the media industry is Vimeo.
| “While resume formats and experiences may differ, from a hiring perspective, [here are] three things I look for:A demonstrated interest in storytelling: do you have a reel, clips, photo exhibits, etc.?What’s the last process you learned (bonus points if it’s something you sought out on your own)?Have you done something in your life that reflects intellectual curiosity (traveled, become expert in a subject etc.)?”-Jim Thompson, Producer, NBC Sports |
